Search Engine Tips

Learn as much as you can about search engines, how they rank pages and what their stipulations are. It is very important to have a general grasp of how they operate and index websites. If you don't get it right the first time, you can always resubmit. After you have a general grasp of search engines, then it is time to understand the importance of website titles and descriptions. This is vitally important to understand and will improve your ranking with many of the search engines on the internet today.

Meta Tags are important to robot-driven search engines. By using Meta Tags you ensure that your website will be listed higher in such search engines. Search engines that do not make use of Meta Tags will simply ignore them. So, it is in your best interest to ensure that they appear on all of the web pages that you want listed in the search engines.

The Meta Tags which are most important to search engines are the following (below each tag is the syntax).

Title (an HTML tag), but very important to spiders.
<TITLE>My Title</TITLE>

Keywords
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="YOUR KEYWORD LIST SEPARATED BY COMMAS">

Description
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENTS IN THE WEB PAGE">

Robots
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="ALL|NONE|INDEX|NOINDEX|FOLLOW|NOFOLLOW">
ALL: Allow all robots
NONE: Do not index any files (in the website)
INDEX: Index this page only
NOINDEX: Do not index this page, but follow links on this page
NOFOLLOW: Tells the Robots to index this page but do not follow any other links
FOLLOW: To index this page and follow all links

Rating (Not required, but is recommended)
<META NAME="rating" CONTENT="General|Mature|Restricted|14 years">

The Description Tag should contain vital information pertaining to the service or product that your are offering. You should keep the length of the Description Tag less than 250 characters. Some search engines will ignore tags that are longer. Be informative and precise about the product or service that the web page contains. This is likely the most important Meta Tag that you will need. Choosing keywords should be done with a great deal of planning, experiment and research. Keywords are words or short phrases that will help locate your website when people conduct searches in various search engines on the internet. For example, if someone was to search on "automobile," and this happened to be one of your keywords, then your website would likely come up higher than your competitor who neglected to use the Keyword Tag.

Ask yourself the question:  If I were looking for my business, what words would I use to search for it? Try locating some of your competitors by using various combinations and see which ones work best. If you see the same competitor come up with different combinations, have a look at the source of the page.

Watch out for keyword repetition. Remember to repeat keywords no more than five or six times. You should use keywords on each page to be submitted to engines, keeping in mind that each page will likely have a different service or product. Your keywords should gear to the page, not the entire website. Use the Title tag to include specific keywords!

Here are a few secrets which can also be incorporated into your website which may help your placement in the search engines.

Title: Another little secret, which will benefit you in some search engines, and give you a jump on your competitors even if they have the same keywords is to use the letter "A" or a number before your actual title. For example, let us assume that the title of your page is"Publishing Company."  Changing the Title Tag to something like "A Very Good Publishing Company" or "[A-1] Publishing Company" will help you out with some engines that sort the results alphabetically.

Key Phrases:  Try to work your keywords into the content of the document as much as possible. This is an important area where a lot of websites fail.  They will utilize the Meta Tags but fail to use these same key phrases throughout the content.  This approach will certainly increase your standings in the search engines.

Different Keyword Pages: You can even make copies of your webpages. They can have the same function, the same content, but different keywords. Warning, this should only be done after you are quite satisfied with the content of your website as it can become difficult to maintain.

Hiding Keywords: You can add additional keywords to your web page by hiding them either with the same color text as the background or to use comments: <! my keyword list here>. Sometimes the key phrase that you want to use are difficult to work into the document content. By placing the text close to the top of the page in the same color as the background text, not visible to visitors, but very visible to web spiders, is very helpful. But, be careful when doing this because some search engines will supposedly blacklist your URL for this action.  Another alternative, especially if a background image is used is to make the text appear in very small text.

Comments for Description & Keyword Tags: This is especially useful for web spiders that do not support Meta Tags. These comments should appear a few line down from the Meta Tags, but should also duplicate, or a relatively close duplication of your Description and Keyword Meta Tags.

Check your URL rating on a regular basis in search engines.

Try various keyword searches to see what your competition is using.

Research several search engines to see how they react to specific search criteria and the results they provide prior to determining your own keyword Meta Tags.
